The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
