Minister Confirms MoD Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret matters in all cars.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret information while riding in China-made cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

The revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of government activities, from transport usage to communication habits.
