As any significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
