Trump Administration to Distribute Partial Food Stamp Funds in November

The US administration announced it would offer limited aid to millions of nutritional assistance beneficiaries as the continuing federal closure neared a record-breaking duration.

Funding Cut Details

Funding for the program legally ended on recently due to the federal closure, now in its thirty-fourth day with little indication of completion.

Legal Proceedings

The decision came in a court filing after prior denials to issue critical funding on claimed legal grounds. A federal judge had decided the administration could not deny program funds due to the shutdown.

Subsequent to the judicial ruling, the administration stated it would be "honored" to provide necessary funding for the program.

Implementation Hurdles

Administrators indicated that benefits could start flowing by midweek, but stressed the need for additional direction from the judiciary on how to properly transfer resources for SNAP benefits.

  • Several local governments have indicated it will take multiple days or even longer periods to distribute benefits to low-income households.
  • Long queues have been observed at food banks throughout the United States.
  • In several regions, large venue parking lots were repurposed into assistance centers.

Local Crisis Measures

Several local governments, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced states of emergency to allocate temporary funds for benefits. However, these allocations were projected to be a limited percentage of the typical federal funding.

The federal spending for SNAP total approximately $8 billion each month in the United States.
