Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.

Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
